Dalton Highway |
|
The Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline runs from Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean to Valdez on the Gulf of Alaska. It runs for 800 miles across mostly wlderness areas featuring highly variable and harsh climates and geography. It was constructed in 3 years and 2 months (4/74 to 6/77) at an estimated cost of $8 billion and 31 lives. From Fairbanks north it is paralleled by the Dalton Highway built in haste as a "haul road" for the construction. Above ground sections were built in a zig-zag fashion to allow for temperature expansion and earthquake protection. Special mounts were also used. |
